Active Military

Thank You for Your Service

We understand that when a household member is called to active military duty, deployed, or reassigned to a new duty station, paying utility bills can become difficult. Minnesota law (Minnesota Statute Chapter 325E.028) offers protection for military personnel facing financial hardship, preventing residential utility shut offs under the following conditions:

  1. If the household’s income is below the state’s median household income or if they are receiving energy assistance, they can enter a payment arrangement where they pay 10% of their gross monthly income toward the bill and stay reasonably current with those payments.
  2. If the household income exceeds the state median, they may establish a payment arrangement based on their financial situation, with reasonable monthly payments and continued adherence to the plan.

Right to Appeal

If you and Greater Minnesota Gas, Inc. (GMG) cannot agree on a payment arrangement, you have the right to appeal to the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission. During this appeal process, GMG will not disconnect your service.
